NASCAR Champion Matt Kobyluck to Participate in 10th Annual Busch Sport Scene Charity Ride
Matt Kobyluck will continue a great tradition of NASCAR Champions that participate in the Busch Sport Scene Ride for Charity. The recently crowned 2008 NASCAR Camping World Series Champion has confirmed that he will be at the 10th annual charity event on January 31st at the Club House Restaurant in Rangeley, Maine.
The event has a rich history of support from reigning champions of NASCAR's Grand National division. In the ten years of the event's history, the reigning NASCAR champion has attended the event in all but one of those years. Matt will become the eighth different NASCAR champion to attend the event, joining the impressive list of Jamie Aube, Dale Shaw, Dave Dion, Kelly Moore, Brad Leighton, Mike Olsen and Andy Santerre.
Kobyluck, a member of the Mohegan Tribal Nation, became the first Native American to win a NASCAR Championship in 2008 when he clinched the Camping World Series title at Dover International Speedway last September with his third-place finish in the Sunoco 150.
"I am thrilled to have Matt joining the 10th Annual Busch Sport Scene Charity event this winter," event organizer and Busch Sport Scene publisher George Campbell said. "Matt is a true champion, he and his Mohegan Sun team worked so hard over the years and really earned their honors this year. I cannot think of a better person to represent this series now. He is one of the most respected drivers on the tour and has become one of the most popular among the fans as well. This will be a great opportunity for race fans in northern New England to meet Matt and see what a great person he is."
Kobyluck, from Uncasville, CT, earned his first career NASCAR Camping World Series East title on the strength of four wins and 12 top 10 finishes in 13 races. As driver and owner of the #40 Mohegan Sun Resort Chevrolet, Kobylucks championship season included wins at Watkins Glen International, Music City Motorplex in Nashville Tenn., Adirondack International Speedway in N.Y., and Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT.
2008 was his 10th full season in the series. Matt has finished in the top 10 each of the last six seasons, with his previous best finish coming in 2002 when he finished in second-place, nine points behind champion Andy Santerre.
As a past runner-up for the championship, Kobyluck will also join an impressive list of former championship runner-up drivers to participate in the event too. Some of the drivers include those like Matt that went on to become champions, and others like Sean Caisse, Tracy Gordon, Joe Bessey and Mike Johnson. The last two are likely to be at the event again this year.
Matt will be in California the weekend before the charity event to race in the NASCAR Toyota All Star Showdown. He won that event in 2006 and is hoping to become the first driver to win the very prestigious race twice.
No one has ever had a repeat win at the Showdown so were hoping to become the first team to do that, said Kobyluck. Weve had a lot of firsts this year first championship, first Native American to win a championship so it would really be icing on the cake to be the first team to win this thing twice.
"I really am pleased that Matt was able to fit our event into his busy off season schedule," Campbell said. "Not only is Matt a Championship race car driver, but he is a very successful businessman in southern Connecticut as an owner of Kobyluck Construction and a very devoted family man. I know how precious time can be. Matt's support of this event shows how popular the event has become."
We definitely have a lot of things going on, said Kobyluck. Probably more than we do during the race season! Im happy to go and be an ambassador for this series. Im pretty excited about it actually. Its a great time to have a chance to sit and talk with the fans.
The event includes a Poker Run snowmobile ride during the day followed by a full evening of entertainment. The proceeds go to several charities including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Maine Special Olympics, Travis Roy Foundation, Rangeley Snowmobile Club, Busch Sport Scene Scholarship Fund and the Camping World Series Women's Auxiliary and their various charities.
