'Madhouse' Racers Tackle Atlanta Motor Speedway in WSMT Opener

By George Campbell

The History Channel reality series MadHouse has become a topic of conversation for race fans this winter. Some viewers are offended by the over the top coverage of the racers and fans, thinking it gives the racing world a bad reputation. Others are having fun just following along. Either way, the show has drawn considerable interest from race fans across the country during the cold, wet winter months.

The MadHouse stars are followed each week as they prepare for and race NASCAR modified's at the historic Bowman Grey race track in Winston-Salem, NC. The modifieds are NASCAR's oldest division and a fan favorite at the 1/4 mile asphalt Bowman Gray Stadium. Junior Miller, Tim "The Rocket" Brown, brothers Burt and Jason Myers and Chris Fleming are the five drivers who are followed throughout the series.

The show often revolves around the long standing family rivalry between the Myers and Miller family race teams. Each episode seems to bring wreckless driving and intentional crashes, with fans cheering and cussing. Much of what can be seen at any regular short track across the country - albeit to a somewhat exaggerated state.

The shows stars will be leaving Bowman Grey next week as the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour (WSMT) kicks off its 2010 season at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 5th. As of this writing, all but one of the five MadHouse racers have filed entries for the race. Only two-time WSMT Champion Junior Miller has yet to enter - which is likely to make his rivals, the Myers brothers, happy.

Among the list of 20+ entries so far for the WSMT opener, are a pair of veterans of the northern NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. New Hampshire native Andy Seuss was the first to file an entry for the race. He will be joined by fellow New Englander James Civali of Meriden, Connecticut. Seuss has made 15 career starts on the north tour and 33 on the southern tour. His six career wins have all been on the WSMT.

Civali has had a checkered past in NASCAR. In 2005 he was suspended and fined for intentionally wrecking Dave Dion in a Busch North Series race at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut. Then in 2006 he won the NASCAR Modified Tour Rookie of the Year title. In 2008 he ran into more problems when he was again suspended, this time for running into Rowan Pennick during a Modified race at Riverhead Raceway in New York. Civali hit Pennick's car while the race was under caution. He has four wins in his NASCAR modified career.

Several drivers in the field have experience in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series too. Corey Lajoie made three starts on the K&N Series last year, including a third place finish at Dover Int'l Speedway in the season finale. Lajoie is the son of former NASCAR Busch Series Champion Randy Lajoie.

L.W. Miller has filed an entry as well. Miller has competed in NASCAR's Nationwide Series, Camping World Truck Series, the former NASCAR Busch North Series and both modified tours. The former WSMT Champion has ten wins on the tour.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour drivers will battle it out under the lights for 150 laps on Atlanta Motor Speedway's 1/4 'Thunder Ring' on the front stretch, immediately following NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying for the Kobalt Tools 500.
