March Means Baseball Coverage at Busch Sport Scene!
By George Campbell
March is coming quick, and for me, that means switching gears from snowmobiling and racing to baseball. Its the time of year I focus on coming up with stories from baseballs spring training.
Over the years, many of the stories I have wrote about in our Racin & Baseball section of the newspaper have come from this annual trek south. This tradition started several years ago when I tied in a trip to Daytona with the news that Red Sox owner John Henry had purchased Roush Racing and it had become Roush Fenway Racing.
Since that time I have enjoyed covering many other baseball related stories for Busch Sport Scene as well as several of the newspapers we work with. Some of my favorites have been about players like Sal Fasano, Trot Nixon, Tip Fairchild, Tim Wakefield & Doug Mirabelli, Tom Gordon and so many more. The many Braves players that have added to our pages, including their Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox. The list goes on, even including Hall of Famers like Reggie Jackson, Yogi Berra, Gaylord Perry and Al Kaline.
As I visit the teams in Florida this year I will be doing research and adding interviews for an upcoming book that will be a takeoff on our popular section in Busch Sport Scene, the Racin & Baseball section. I touched on this topic in the book I wrote last fall, Busch North Scene: A Ten Year Retrospective.
As I mentioned in the book last fall, there have been many ties between the two sports. Some of my favorites I mentioned have involved two former Red Sox outfielders: Mike Greenwell and Ted Williams.
Mike Greenwell owned a NASCAR team in New England while he was a Red Sox player, then actually raced in NASCAR after he retired from baseball. All-time great Ted Williams sponsored a pair of cars in the NASCAR Busch North Series in the late 1990s.
So this year, in addition to the articles I will be writing for other publications on baseball, I will be banking stories for an upcoming Busch Sport Scene book. If you have any ideas or tips for stories related to this topic, feel free to drop me a note.
My coverage will start with the Boston Red Sox, where we always find plenty of great news. I will also be making trips to the Braves, Astro's and Tigers camps among others. I am also looking forward to catching up with long time Busch Sport Scene favorite Sal Fasano at the Jays camps as he has been promoted to the manager of the Jay's AA team in New Hampshire this season. As I have done for several years now, I will be adding a trip to the MLBPA Legends Game in Clearwater as well. This is a great time for a great cause, stay tuned for details.
As I start my baseball coverage in March, I am going to try something new. I am going to post some related news on the Busch Sport Scene website, and will add notes to what I am working on and where you can read it.
