12th & Final Busch Sport Scene Snowmobile Ride for Charity Highlights

The 12th Annual Busch Sport Scene Snowmobile Ride and Auction for Charity was held on February 5, 2011 at Moose Alley in Rangeley, Maine. The event was once again a huge success drawing many generous racers and race fans and raising well over $10,000 for several great charities. The amount raised this year brought the total amount raised in the events 12 year history to over $125,000. The bulk of the money raised went to the Maine Special Olympics, The MS Society and the Travis Roy Foundation.

There were nearly 100 riders during the day with the main group of nearly three dozen riding to the five poker run check points highlighted by a lunch stop at the Fly In at Bald Mountain Camps on Mooselook Lake. The party started around 6PM at Moose Alley with the auction starting around 8PM. The auction item that received the highest bid was the Wes Welker signed Patriots photo which eventually sold to Larry Koob for $875. Larry faced tough challenges from Mike Olsen, Jim Place and his brother Mike before finally getting the framed photo for $875.

Below are some photos from the event provided by Robin Fish, who since she was behind the camera, is not in any of the photos!

The poker run started with the first stop at Boss Power Equipment. Boss, which was formerly PJ's Cat House, were great sponsors of the event again this year. Among the many generous donations to the event, they also donated the Arctic Cat F7 rental snowmobile I rode as well as the sled Katie Hagar rode. The crew from Boss were also on hand and very generous with their bidding in the auction that evening. That's Andy Santerre in the red jacket.

The second stop on the poker run was long time supporter Niboban Camps on the south side of Rangeley Lake. Niboban has been a stop on the poker run since the very first year and a great supporter of the event ever since. Having stayed at the camps in the past, I can tell you it is a fantastic place to visit. In fact I will be staying there again this summer, thanks to my friend Jimmy Kilduff who was the high bidder on the Niboban package in the auction.

Andy Santerre waves the Bill Penfold fan he was awarded.

Andy was named Busch North Scene Driver of the Decade and awarded a Get Etched Granite plaque with the honor inscribed with a photo.

Busch Beer fan Mike Olsen receives a Busch Beer banner.

Mike and his team traveled to Rangeley for the event again this year, despite just returning home from a long ten day trip to the west coast for racing & testing.

George presents Greg with a signed/framed/matted print of the final issue of Busch Sport Scene. The print was one of just 13 made, one for each year the paper was printed. It is signed by all seven of the drivers on the cover. Greg has been a Busch Sport Scene columnist for years and is one of just six people to have attended the charity event every year. He has also been the head dealer of the poker hands for all the years too.

George presents great friend Jim Place with a Turner Highlands Pooper Scooper (golf club) to help Jim and wife Cindy deal with the frozen dog droppings around their home in the Turner Highlands Golf Course. Jim and Cindy have been tremendous supporters of the event over the years, having attended nearly all of them with Tina and I. They are also among the highest total bidders in the events history, if not the highest. My sincerest thanks to Jim and Cindy for all they have done.

Jim Place presents George with a framed edition of the final issue of Busch Sport Scene, signed by many of the people at the event.

Soup displays the framed paper Jim presented him. More people signed it that evening and Jim took it home to have it framed for George.

A Bessey Motorsports crew shirt signed by Andy Santerre is auctioned.

George auctions a copy of his book, signed by several of the drivers.

Katie Hagar describes the signed helmet she donated for the auction. The helmet which was a very popular item in the auction, was used by Katie when she set the track qualifying record at Stockton 99 Speedway in California.

Katie returned to her home state of Maine for the second winter in a row, just to join the charity event again this year. Boos Power Equipment supplied Katie with a great snowmobile for the poker run again this year too. Katie was also a guest on Mainely Motorsports earlier in the week to promote the event.

Cindy & Jim Place with the signed print they won in the auction. Jim and Cindy's table, led by Jimmy & Kathy Kilduff with assistance from Tina Campbell and Eric Lukacs were the dominant bidding table with nearly $2500 worth of auction items bought. What and honor for me to have such great friends. My group at this table accounted for nearly one quarter of all the money raised during the event! Another of the three tables on the floor, the Boss Power Equipment table, were also very generous with their bidding, having contributed well over $2000 during the auction, highlighted by the Sea Dogs package they bought for $500, and the merchandise they donated.

Comedian Dave Andrews performs after the auction - and was joined by Donna Daigle!

Deanna and Katie dancing the night away! After Dave Andrews performance, the band hit the stage - and Andrews returned to help with his harmonica.

Kirk, Deanna and Andy. Deanna was the poker run winner. Her prize package included a Boss Power Equipment gift certificate and a Rivers Edge Gift Certificate.

The original Busch North Scene banner returned.

There are so many people I have to thank for all the great support I have received. There are too many to list them all here, but here are a few that were at the event:

Many of the Busch Sport Scene staff members, led by Greg Fish and Mike Twist. My little brother (not because of his size) Eric Lukacs who traveled from Pennsylvania again this year and wore a plunger on his head for our entertainment. His trip here was a Christmas present from his wife Colleen. My great friends Jim & Cindy Place, who as I said, have been among the events greatest supporters and my closest friends for a long time. With out their support, I don't know for certain that this event would have lasted 12 years. They have made it a pleasure for my wife and I both for many years. I know the event would not have lasted 12 years with out Carolee Sargent and Darlene Morrill, who have handled the sign in, raffle sales and auction money and so much more every year. They truly keep me organized and on track, they have been the backbone of the event. I cannot thank them enough. Donna Daigle and her family have helped with the raffle and auction for years, and been great representatives of the Maine Special Olympics at the event for many years. She was also a fun addition to the comedy show! Steve and Mac Dudley from the Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club, who have been our ride guides each year. Nancy Bessey for being a great host for the event. It was also great to see Monika Taylor at the event. Monika has been the host of the event for the past few years, before selling the place to Nancy last fall. My dad Tom, who still managed to contribute, despite the flu keeping him from joining us this year. My friends Jim & Kathy Kilduff, who made their first trip to the event and were the most active bidders of the evening. Jimmy told me later that it sucked that this was the final year. I wish I had known Jimmy and Kathy during the events first eleven years and had invited them then as they were a joy to have join my group this year. Larry Koob who has also been a great supporter of this event over the years, along with his brother Mike who really wanted the Wes Welker signed photo, but not quite as bad as his brother. All the drivers and crewmembers that took time out of their schedule to join us again, including Andy Santerre and Katie Hagar who both traveled all the way from North Carolina. Mike Olsen and his entire team, Freddie Skaff and his wife Elaine, Tracy Gordon and many more. Long time BNS family members Bob & Deb Harrison, who have also been to the event every year. These are some of the many people I also regret not having time during the event to spend any quality time with. The Fowler family & group who also support and add so much to the event each year. Robin Fish who is always running around with her camera - even when you aren't quite ready for it! All the many local businesses that have continued to support this event, from Boss to Niboban and everywhere in between. The Rangeley Chamber has been essential to gathering the local support and keeping this event flowing. Most of all I want to thank my wife Tina. She has put up with my taking time away from her and tolerated my 'stress' levels as I get closer to the event each year. I have always managed to put undue stress on myself trying to make this event as close to perfect as possible each year, and she is right there beside me as my stress level rises, and still manages to put up with me. She has been my greatest supporter, and the person I am happiest to see when the event winds down.

There are many more people I have to thank, so to everyone that has been a help and supporter, thanks for everything, it took everyone of you to raise the money we did for the great charities. Thank you, Soup
