Rock Band 'Comic Book Heroes' Making a Name in NASCAR

By Dylan Lajoie

In a time when true rock and roll is hard to find, one new band is bringing back the genuine sound of what rock is all about. The young, up and coming band Comic Book Heroes has hit the main stage for today’s music in the alternative rock world. Listing influences in the classic rock community along with today’s alternative rock and pop scene, this is surely one rock act to watch progress into one of the top bands in the music industry.

Helping the young band based from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania achieve their success in the music industry is their partnership with ESPN and NASCAR’s Nationwide series. The band has been heavily featured during broadcasts of the NASCAR Nationwide Series events this year.

"We started working with NASCAR about a year ago when they started licensing our music for the Nationwide Series and their broadcasting of that, and then we did a music video with them for two of our songs, Move Out of the Way and Catch Me If You Can," said the bands lead vocalist and guitarist Ned Goldman.

Their experiences with NASCAR will help boost the band’s popularity and success. Steve Kowalski, Comic Book Heroes’ bassist says, "It’s been a really positive influence, race fans are great. They’re so passionate about their sport and also very passionate about their music, so we couldn’t be happier being partnered up with NASCAR and the Nationwide Series."

All four members of Comic Book Heroes, Steve Kowalski, Ned Goldman, Collin MacGregor on drums, and Steve Kosciusko on lead guitar were at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the Lennox 301 race weekend, where they had a merchandise tent set up outside of the grandstands in turn one. There they were very busy meeting and greeting fans during the weekend leading up to their performance opening for the popular classic rock band Foghat, during the prerace show leading up to the Sprint Cup Series event at the track.

Playing their original songs like "Catch Me If You Can," "Move Out Of The Way," and "Wide Open," which are popular among NASCAR Nationwide Series fans, Comic Book Heroes played an excellent set for the fans that had gathered in the stands along the front stretch of New Hampshire Motor Speedway. They drew fans of all ages in, using their great on stage chemistry and musical expertise. It was impressive for a band with members of such young ages, who first started playing together at the age of just 11 years old, to be have such a stage presence. One specific highlight of the set for me was their cover of "Running Down a Dream," which was a big hit for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. They kept the song recognizable, while at the same time adding their own unique twists and modernizing it to fit the musical voice Comic Book Heroes had now developed.

For one member of the band the performance was a little extra special. Drummer Collin MacGregor would be opening for his father, who is Craig MacGregor, the bassist for Foghat.
